FOR WRITERS: Why do we write?
This is an article I posted on my Gather.com site, and I thought I'd share it here:
There are probably as many reasons to write as there are writers, but I think we all share something in common. That is the need to reach out to others. Whether it’s in the form of poetry, or novels, or artwork, there’s that need to connect. To have someone see or read your work and say, yes, that’s exactly how I feel. That’s exactly what I think. Or, I’ve never looked at life that way before, and you’ve opened my eyes.
That’s why we joined Gather, isn’t it?
I write novels, unusual blends of fantasy and romance. For me, it’s the thrill of having someone I’ve never met enter a world of my own making, meet characters that are now truly alive because someone other than myself experiences them as real. It’s the ultimate way of sharing. When I write, I’m taken away from the problems and concerns of the real world. When people read my work, what joy to realize that while they’re immersed in my story, they are also taken away from their lives, to be lost in a magical place where good triumphs and evil fails.
And speaking of magic, there’s something of wonder in taking nothing, whether it’s a blank page of paper or canvas, and creating something. Something that didn’t exist before you set your creativity to it.
A final thought: I believe science fiction novels embraced the reality of landing on the moon long before it ever happened, and some laughed at the idea. But it made others dream, and from that dream it became reality. I believe whatever we dream we can make happen, if we want to; but first we have to make it a reality by sharing it with others.
And then anything is possible.
